Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a mental health condition characterized by a problematic pattern of alcohol consumption that leads to significant distress or impairment in daily functioning. According to the American Psychiatric Association, Alcohol Use Disorder includes symptoms such as difficulty controlling alcohol use, persistent cravings, continued use despite harmful consequences, and in some cases physical dependence (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).

Alcohol misuse is a major public health concern and is associated with numerous physical health problems including liver disease, cardiovascular issues, and neurological complications. In addition, Alcohol Use Disorder often occurs alongside other psychological conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, and trauma-related disorders, which can complicate both diagnosis and treatment.

Personality psychology provides an important perspective in understanding why some individuals are more vulnerable to developing Alcohol Use Disorder. Research suggests that certain personality traits—such as impulsivity, sensation seeking, and high neuroticism—are associated with increased risk for substance misuse (Kotov et al., 2010). Individuals who struggle with emotional regulation may turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism to manage stress or psychological distress.

Understanding personality differences is also important in treatment. Personality traits can influence how individuals respond to therapy, their motivation for recovery, and their ability to maintain long-term behavioral change. By considering personality factors, clinicians can develop more individualized treatment approaches that improve recovery outcomes.
